Street Photography for Beginners: Mindset, Technique, and Gear

Every beginner asks about gear first. It’s the wrong first question, but I understand it, because gear is the part you can buy. Mindset you have to earn.

So here’s the honest order: mindset first, technique second, gear last. Mindset is deciding to go out and shoot, regularly, without waiting to feel ready. Technique is the boring stuff: learn your camera, learn light, learn to see backgrounds. Gear is whatever you have.

I have a shelf of cameras and my best photos were taken with the cheapest ones as often as the expensive ones. The camera never once made the photo better. It just recorded what I noticed.

Start with the camera you own. Shoot JPEG, keep it simple, and go outside. The gear conversation can wait until you’ve taken ten thousand photos. By then you’ll know what you actually need, which is almost certainly not what the internet told you to buy.
