You do not need money to be a photographer. You need a camera. An entry point camera gets you in the game.
This is a Nikon D80. Ten megapixel CCD sensor. I bought it for under 150 bucks with the 18-70mm kit lens, which is 27 to 105 equivalent on crop. CCD, it is like shooting slide film all over again.
Any old DSLR under two hundred dollars in 2026 is a real camera. Canon, Pentax, whatever. It is ideal for a beginner, or for a kid or grandkid graduating from a phone who cannot justify a thousand to fifteen hundred dollars for mirrorless.
Cheap cameras teach you everything about actually using a camera. And here is my advice: skip the prime. Use the kit zoom. Do not waste your money on a prime. It is sharp as you need it to be, and nobody online can tell the difference. The people pushing primes on beginners are elitists. Punk ass elitists.
The technical lesson matters too. About four stops of dynamic range forces you to expose for the highlights. You learn to get it right in camera, because you have no choice.
Do not just live vicariously through YouTube. Get a real camera in your hand. Your photos capture moments that no other photographer will ever take, in that moment in time.
I am happy if I can inspire you to do something today that you did not think of doing yesterday.
