Break the Rules of Street Photography

“Break the rules of street photography.”

Get close. Use this focal length, not that one. Never crop. Don’t shoot from too far away. Capture the decisive moment. You have heard them all.

Says who?

I wore my SAYS WHO cap for this one, because photography is not about checking boxes. Breaking the tried-and-true rules is how you make photographs that look like you instead of photographs that look like everybody else’s homework.

“Cuz if the picture’s not good enough, you’re not close enough.” That is one of the old rules. Sometimes it is true. Sometimes the best photo I made all day was from across the street. Rules are suggestions with good PR.

So the next time somebody tells you how street photography has to be done, there is really only one question to ask.

Says who?
