I had a brilliant idea. I would shoot the University of Tennessee Orange and White Game, the most colorful event in East Tennessee, entirely in black and white.
About thirty seconds into filming the intro, I realized how dumb that sounded. So naturally, I doubled down.
Out came the Ricoh GR3 with its Hard Black & White profile. And mixed in with the monochrome, some vivid color shots of the game-day chaos, including an orange TENNESSEE team bus rolling in with a police motorcycle escort.
“I really can’t come to the most colorful event in East Tennessee… and expect to shoot in black and white.” And yet… I did.
The GR III’s black and white output is remarkable. The mix of both captures the two sides of the day’s energy.
Here is the lesson, and it applies to more than photography: “sometimes the idea doesn’t have to be perfect – you just have to go shoot.”
