Why Eterna Failed Me on the X100VI

In a street photography forum, some non shooters claimed that festival and parade shooting is too easy, like shooting fish in a barrel, and should be avoided. I answered by linking my last two parade and festival videos. Then I went somewhere even easier: the tourist trap. Gatlinburg, Tennessee. East Tennesseans stay away. Everybody else comes here, even on a Thursday.

The experiment: shoot the day on the X100VI, about four thousand shots, this camera is just amazing, in the Eterna film sim. I had never used it for stills. I know that is probably just for shooting videos.

Test shots looked overexposed, so I dialed down the exposure compensation.

The verdict: Eterna is not a straight out of camera Fujifilm simulation. While editing I thought, what in the world? Eterna is for video and post production.

I love Velvia, Provia, Astia, Classic Chrome straight out of camera. I lift a shadow here and there, but generally I leave those as they are.

Look at these Eterna shots. Uh, no.

The avoidable mistake: do not shoot Eterna expecting finished straight out of camera stills. Use it as a film profile with post processing.

I had such hopes.

Side question: is my added base plate and grip killing the look? It is all about the look with me. I got to look good as a street photographer.
