Coached by the Street Photography Legends (Sort of…)

I have never had a mentor. Nobody took me under their wing, showed me the ropes, critiqued my contact sheets over coffee. But I have been coached by the legends anyway. Sort of.

My coaches are dead or unreachable, and they do not know I exist. I studied their books until the pages fell out. I stood in front of their prints in museums and tried to reverse-engineer what they saw. I watched interviews, read essays, stole ideas with both hands.

That is the beautiful thing about photography. The masters left the syllabus behind. Every great photo book is a masterclass, and it costs thirty bucks instead of thirty thousand in tuition.

So here is my coaching program, free of charge. Pick three photographers whose work stops you cold. Study them until you can see the world the way they do. Then forget everything and shoot like yourself.

The legends cannot critique your work. But they already taught you everything, if you were paying attention.
