Ricoh GR Snap Focus Distance, Explained in Car Lengths

Snap focus distance on the Ricoh GR III and GR IV, explained for Americans. Because we do not do meters. They did not teach us the metric system. Remember the liters per gallon thing? Yeah.

Even ten feet is hard to judge horizontally. We know ten feet high, that is a basketball goal. But ten feet across? Forget it.

So here is my system: car lengths. We speak in car lengths, baby. Thank you, Ward Burton.

I went to a Walmart parking lot and measured everything. A Toyota RAV4 is 4.6 meters, so use the 5 meter snap setting. A Sprinter van is 6 meters. A shopping cart is 1.1 meters, use the 1.5. A Mini Cooper is 4.3. A semi is 7. A dumpster is 2.3. A caravan trailer is 6.5. A Lincoln Town Car is 5.5. Eight foot two by fours are 2.4. A Volkswagen GTI is 4.2. A Lexus SUV is 4.8. A pickup truck is 5.7. A Smart car is 2.7. A Harley Sportster is 2.2.

And the only safe distance from a Hooters is the infinity focus distance.

I am considering the GR IV or saving money on a GR III. Mine is the Street Edition. Snap focus has a learning curve, but that full press snap is remarkable for street. I love the look, the shooting, the colors.

You will figure it out. Probably. You probably still do not get it.
