Sorry about the clickbait thumbnail. Throw away your DSLR was meant as DON’T. This video is about rediscovering the DSLR and the look that was all its own. I am calling it DSLRic, right alongside filmic.
Everybody is obsessed with making digital look like film. Grain, film sims, vintage lenses, trying to make photos look like they were shot in 1974. But the DSLR era had a distinct look: sharp, clean, rich, confident images that do not apologize for being digital. They are just looking like themselves.
Film stopped being a medium and became an aesthetic. And I hate that word.
My gear journey: the Nikon D70, 6 megapixels. Oh my god, how will I ever go back to film? The D600. The D7100 and D7200, which I recommend for a couple hundred bucks, because the difference between full frame and APS-C, you cannot tell. And a Nikon D810 I bought for 500 dollars with a 50mm FX lens. Thirty six megapixels. Remarkable shots.
I shot nothing but DSLR digital for a month. Barely edited, maybe lifted a shadow.
Nothing is more clandestine and sneaky and stealthy for street photography than sticking a big DSLR in someone’s face. Not one person shied away.
As far as I can tell, only Lucy Lumen with her D7500 is still championing DSLRs on YouTube.
You do not need three thousand dollars of new mirrorless. A three to four hundred dollar, 10 or 12 or 16 megapixel DSLR with an old lens gives you great digital photos with a look all its own. Step back without getting all retro and hipster. Just enjoy a time that passed us really quickly.
