I live in a small town. Louisville, Tennessee, population not many. And I shoot street photography there, which confuses people who think street photography requires a subway and eight million strangers.
Small town street photography is a different game. You cannot be invisible, so do not try. Be the friendly guy with the camera. Say good morning. Buy the coffee. Come back next week. In a small town, you are not a stranger with a lens, you are a regular who happens to shoot.
The rhythms are slower, which is actually a gift. Learn them. The hardware store opens at seven. The lunch crowd hits the diner at noon. Friday night the high school football game empties the whole town into one set of bleachers. Show up where life happens and wait.
And here is the secret advantage of small towns. The backgrounds do not change, so you can work a spot for weeks. That great wall with the afternoon light? It will be there tomorrow. The cast of characters rotates through it like a play.
You do not need a big city. You need curiosity and comfortable shoes.
