Canon EOS R8 Un-Unboxing: First Impressions

Pure GAS purchase. No box, no unboxing. Just the camera.

I bought it at Best Buy despite the fifteen percent restocking fee, because a Best Buy credit card gave ten percent back in rewards. Two hundred ten dollars off a camera that is the exact same price everywhere. B and H, Adorama, Amazon. Like Kohl’s cash I will spend on lenses.

The R8 has the same sensor as the R6 Mark II, about eight hundred to a thousand cheaper.

Kit with the RF 24-50mm. I will not keep it. Two hundred in the kit versus three hundred alone, so selling at 250 nets me fifty and boosted my ten percent discount. Plus everybody’s highly recommended RF 35mm f/1.8. I love 35mm.

First impressions: tactile as hell, feels good in the hand, lightweight, small. But no pinky room. I may get the extension grip. No IBIS, so I wanted the lens stabilization. Single card slot. I do not plan to shoot any weddings. No joystick, the R6 II has one, but eye AF for street people shots makes it moot. D-pad plus touchscreen suffice. Fewer buttons. We make do.

Fifty two millimeter filter thread. The EOS R8 strap. I am a bit of a strap guy.

Full frame. My only other full frame is the ten year old fixed lens Leica Q. This is my first Canon mirrorless.

History: my first real camera was the Canon A1, graduation 1983. The AE-1, the AE-1 Program. I went Nikon for DSLRs, the D70 which I still own, the D90, the D700, back when I sold Ritz cameras. Then I sold all the Nikon for the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the 23mm f/2.

I admit I care a little that Canon with big white lenses looks a little more professional.

I have collected digicams since 1999, the 3.2 megapixel Sonys, and I have made hundreds, I will say thousands, selling the horde.

I should have ended this damn thing five minutes ago. Next videos: street shooting with the R8. I promise I will not have a new camera next time.
