The Society of Photographers has released their Photographer of the Year winners for 2024, and I am the kid who loved the film strip machine in school and sat front row for the neighbors’ vacation slideshows, so of course we’re going through these.
The overall winner proves to me that animals don’t have taste buds. I have seen what gets eaten on the side of the road. No taste buds. Case closed.
Then there’s the dog caught mid-zoomies by its owner, pure joy, lovely color. A fighter jet that looks caught in a flat spin with contrails in every color, scary and beautiful at the same time. And one entry that made me stop and think, did an AI photo sneak into this competition? Because that question is going to follow every contest from now on.
