Three way APS-C battle extraordinaire. The Fujifilm X100VI with a film sim I had never shot. The Ricoh GR III with a sim I did not know existed, because I never scrolled past black and white. And the Sony A6700 with its very creatively named film simulation. AI picked the most similar sims across the cameras.
The verdict: meh. They all look the same. There really is no film sim battle.
Film sims are just a baseline. And let me tell you the most overused phrase in street photography videos: and you know, took these straight out of camera. No, you are tweaking, bro. We all tweak our shots. Across 7,500 shots I rarely post anything untweaked.
I never shoot RAW. I do not sell to a stock agency anymore. I just like to take pictures. Photos flash on screen for two and a half to three seconds. Nobody can tell JPEG from RAW.
The sim is the frying pan, the recipe, the ingredients. Everybody turns the sim into their own recipe, even Classic Chrome, Classic Negative, Nostalgic Neg.
I sold Fujifilm as a Ritz Camera rep in the eighties. I shot a Pentax K1000 and a Canon A-1. Anyone who grew up with film and then shot a five or six megapixel digital camera never went back.
I know a Fujifilm fanboy calling film sims meh is sacrilegious. The Fujifilm fanboys will come for me. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee. Come on down, we will talk.
Thanks for watching this ridiculous video and the big film sim battle.
