“So, does where you live determine how good you become as a street photographer?”
Think about basketball. Julia Serving grew up in New York City playing 15 pickup games a day at Rucker Park. Larry Bird grew up in French Lick, Indiana, where he was lucky to get a pickup game. Both became greats.
The big city shooter has the edge on paper. More people. More locations. More opportunities. More chances to practice. In a big city, you just have to find the photographs.
“In a small town, you got to make the photographs.” Same Main Street, same faces, people who know you by name. Can you keep it interesting the 1,500th time? That is the real test.
I will admit the romance of it. New York City, somewhere new to shoot every day, even after 30 years. That sounds pretty great.
I am never going to settle this one in my own head. What do you think? Comments are open.
