Layering is when a street photo has multiple things happening at different depths, foreground, middle, background, all lined up like the universe planned it. And the internet loves to fight about whether those shots are luck or staged.
Here is my take. Most of them are patience disguised as luck. A photographer finds a great background, stands there for forty-five minutes, and waits for the pieces to fall into place. Is that staged? The photographer did not hire actors. He just refused to leave.
I will admit there is a line. If you asked the guy in the red coat to walk through your frame three times, that is a directed photo. Nothing wrong with it, just do not tell me it was a lucky accident. Honesty is the whole currency here.
But waiting is not staging. Anticipation is a skill. The best street photographers are not luckier than you, they are just more stubborn about standing in one spot.
So is it luck or lies? Mostly it is neither. It is showing up, seeing the frame before it happens, and having the patience to let the world walk into it.
