Working in Photography is a Joy Killer

Hot take from a guy with 37 years of doing radio for a living: the fastest way to kill your love of something is to make it your job.

Photography was supposed to be the fun part. The hobby. The thing I do because I like it, not because a client needs it by Thursday. The minute you start shooting for invoices instead of for yourself, the camera starts feeling like a timesheet.

I am not saying do not go pro. I am saying know what you are signing up for. Deadlines, client revisions, shooting what other people want instead of what you want. It is a job. Jobs have parts that are not fun. That is the deal.

So here is my rule. Keep one camera that is only for you. No clients, no deliverables, no pressure. That camera is yours. Everything else can be work. That one stays joy.

In the video I talk about how I protect the fun part, because I need the fun part. The fun part is the whole reason any of us picked up a camera in the first place.
