Happy holidays, everybody.
Family was in town, and like a lot of you, all I wanted for Christmas was to get out and shoot. So I did what any of us would do. The mall. December 23rd and 24th. Prime street photography conditions.
This video goes back through the take and explains the why behind each shot, because “why did you take that picture” is the most useful question a street photographer can ask himself.
A good mannequin will always make me stop. A mannequin in a window, looking out at somebody who doesn’t know it’s there? I’m shooting that, every time.
One shot I waited on. The colors, all the shoes, her looking right past me. Another one is scarves and a guy in Buffalo check flannel, patterns working together, me hoping he’d walk into the frame and other shoppers having different ideas. And a purple and green one, because coordinating colors in a scene is the kind of thing you either see instantly or never see at all.
This is the whole craft. Noticing first. Explaining later.
