Beginners think street photography is about people. It’s not. It’s about scenes. The people are just the part that moves.
Work the scene means this: find a background with good light and interesting geometry, and then work it. Shoot it empty. Shoot it with one person. Wait for two people. Wait for the light to change. Most beginners take one frame and walk away. Take twenty. The first five are warmups.
And not the people means: stop chasing interesting faces down the sidewalk. Chasing makes you hurried, and hurried photos look hurried. Let the people come to the scene. They will. Cities are full of people going places, and your scene is on the way.
This one mindset shift will improve your photos more than any camera upgrade. I know because I’ve done both, and only one of them worked.
